'So where the bloody hell are you?' is a highly successful AU$180 million advertising campaign launched in 2006 by Tourism Australia created by London-based advertising agency M&C Saatchi. The adverts feature images of Australians "preparing" for visitors to their country. It begins in an Outback pub with the barkeeper saying "we've poured you a beer". Further imagery to a similar effect is then shown, including a young boy on the beach saying "we've got the sharks out of the pool" and partygoers watching Sydney harbour fireworks saying "we've turned on the lights". The advert ends with bikini-clad model Lara Bingle stepping out of the sea and asking "so where the bloody hell are you?". The campaign has received massive press coverage, and British prime minister Tony Blair even asked "Where the bloody hell am I?" when speaking in Australian Parliament and suffering from jet lag. Not all is rosy between Australia and Lara Bingle. She is suing the new titillating face of lads' mags, Zoo Weekly, for defamation, misleading conduct and breach of copyright. In March the magazine published revealing photographs of Bingle on a beach, which contrasted with the famous tourism ad in which she was again on a beach, but wearing a sensible bikini suitable for global family viewing. Before it published the spread, Zoo asked her for a shoot of its own, but her agent turned it down. So it went elsewhere. In documents filed in the Federal Court this week, Bingle alleges the pics it published were taken in August, but were taken only for two uses: promoting the photographer's company, Roger Management; and her modelling career. They weren't meant for where they wound up - in Zoo, with the cover declaring: "World Exclusive! Bloody Hell! TV ad girl Lara Bingle's first-ever men's mag shoot". That won the mag significant attention - from this page, The Australian, The Daily Terror, across Australia and on the web - and, now, a 19-page lawsuit. Along with an alleged breach of copyright, Bingle claims the spread defamed her by implying she: -- Consented to pose in a G-string bikini for a smutty men's magazine; -- Was the sort of model who would invite readers to achieve sexual pleasure from her photographs; and -- Was prepared to demean herself for money by being photographed scantily clad for a smutty men's magazine. She also claims Zoo engaged in misleading conduct by representing she had posed topless for the magazine and had said, "I'll make you come", words contained in a speech bubble on one of the photographs. The magazine's publisher, Emap Australia, said in a statement: "Emap rejects completely the allegations made by Lara Bingle and will defend this claim with the utmost vigour." Game on. This would all be terribly unjust if the mag had, say, followed her down to the beach and taken photos without her permission. But these pics were from a professional photo shoot done in August and were "taken only for two uses: promoting the photographer's company, Roger Management [snigger] and her modelling career". So Bingle's beef is not so much that she was being objectified for the pleasure of men but who gets to treat her as if she were a piece of meat. It's a bit rich to say you're not prepared to demean yourself for money in a men's mag if you're quite clearly prepared to demean yourself for money for a photographer or modelling agency. We can't wait to see how THIS one turns out. SYDNEY model Lara Bingle says she is happy being single and has no desire to start a relationship.
